- Controlling free will
Submitted question covered in this blog: " Can a spell control someone else's free will?" This is a topic that has alot of hype and misconceptions that have lead to many witches showing concerns for in public forums and in social media for years. However, the truth is that the absolute only person who can control their free will ... is themselves ! The definition of Free Will is: " The notional capacity or ability to choose between different possible courses of action unimpeded. Free will is closely linked to the concepts of moral responsibility, praise, culpability, sin, and other judgements which apply only to actions that are freely chosen. " For this very question, many practitioners feel that they need to ask permission from their target first before casting a spells onto someone else no matter what intentions are involved. In theory by asking permission a caster is working to avoid potential negative Law-of-three outcomes: that what is sent out come back three times fold. This perception is often applied to certain types of workings more than others, like the concept of love spells. For example, is a spell intended to influence someone else to fall in love with you actually the formation of a genuine relationship? In my opinion, Yes - it is. Because, the target of the working would still need to go-with-the-flow of the 'new idea' that has been presented to them - no one is forced to blindly obey. Spells can have an impactful effect on others when it has caught the interest of the target and there is a willingness to follow through with the intention. Even hexes and curses must find ways of influential impact by exploiting possibilities of weakness or vulnerabilities in order to make any difference. More about curses and hexes is available in this orbits blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/curses-and-hexes If intending to send blessings and well wishes to someone else, then from my perspective, permission to do so is not required . In the same way as I wouldn't ask permission before sending a get-well-soon card or some flowers, etc. to someone who was healing from an injury or illness. So, why would I then need permission to send influence for the promotion of fast healing with a spell? To my knowledge other religions, such as Catholic, or Christian, etc. do not ask permission before initiating in prayer for someone else. Free will is always our own and can never be controlled by another. Each of us ultimately has the choice to follow through with magickal influences of any spell. The more open to, or vulnerable to persuasion a target of a spell is the more likely they will be influenced by a spell caster's intented manifestation. The more confident and strong minded a target of a spell is the less probable of desired outcome - unless, the target agrees with the same intentions themselves. This is fundamentally how protections work. By raising confidence, our free will is empowered to be less vulnerable to any external influences. More about protections is available in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/protections However, I do beleive that there ARE instances when a magickal caster should ask permission before involving someone else in individual spellwork. Such as, to do spells for someone else's intentions instead of your own. For example, doing someone else's spell for them instead of them doing their spell for themselves. One should never just go ahead and do spells on behalf of someone without understanding all of the conditions, details, and variances of the situation. As well as considered any possible ramifications or consequences that may be unforeseen, etc. Getting permission first and involving the target in the process of the workings also allows you to ask questions, gain related knowledge with the targets insight, and to be sure you have considered all aspects and have all of the information that you need to consider beforehand. Thank you to whom submitted this question. It is in hopes helpful. Please, always feel free to reach out if I can clarify or answer any other questions. Thank you as well for reading my blog! Blessed be.
- Secular Wicca
Submitted question covered in this blog: " Does Wicca have to involve a Goddess and/or God ?" This question is so very much appreciated, as it touches closely on my own personal practices in Wicca. For example, although following a Seax Wiccan structured tradition, I work with representations of different interior parts of myself, and not external supernatural supreme beings, or creators. This essentially makes me a secular practitioner. I, myself, am a sort of Humanist Wiccan. Wiccan Divinity Drawing There are many Wiccan practitioners that believe a non-theistic approach to Wicca is not a proper Wiccan way. Afterall, From the first Gardnerian version of Wicca, to most branches of Wicca that followed are mainly viewed as a religious practice usually involving a Goddess and/or God. More about Wiccae can be read in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/wicca-in-more-detail Wicca in more detail. Find the right path that resonates with you. As a practitioner, who follows the Wiccan Rede, respects the Law of III, celebrates the wheel and was initiated into the practices and rituals of an Anglo Saxon tradition, I am a devotee to certain feminine and masculine aspects of human nature. The ways in which I work with the aspects of my inner self are similar to, if not the same as, how many practitioners explain how they work with deities, and their experiences of doing so. With the similarities between my own self 'pantheon' so-to-speak represented within the Anglo Saxon traditions of the New Moon Sacred Meadow Circle, i was/am accepted as a Gesith Seax Wiccan Initiate. There are always representations on my working alter of a feminine aspect and a masculin aspect (that I resonate with either from nature, or from within myself). I give offerings in attempt to connect with the specific aspects I desire to work with and I also show thanks to the aspects I feel I've connected with or enlightened. Synchronoustic messages come from within my deep subconscious psyche as symbols and references stand out to me. From my own perspective, this can be viewed as guidance in the same ways as it would from a deity, an angel, a guide, etc. ...from an aspect of my own human nature. Then, who is to say that I should not identify as a Wiccan? Here is the confusion: Although, my invocations are the same, and carried out accordingly, contradictory to many Wiccan beliefs, in my opinion, the deities do not exist as external all powerful supernatural beings. Most Wiccans pay honourage and tribute to deities. For me, Goddesses and Gods can be symbolic representations for different aspects of the different 'pieces to the puzzle' of my own inner self. Each specific deity acts as an archetype that can be focused to draw out from within the desired human qualities or abilities. It is a way for us to analyse, come to terms with, and utilize specific charectoristics that may already exist deep within our instincts and subconscious, or that we desire to improve upon. These qualities come from simply being human and it is my belief that one day science will eventually be able to explain further about intuition, emotion, and consciousness, leading to a much clearer understanding of energy work, divinity, manifestation, etc. In my personal view, the fundamental structure of Wicca is self empowerment. Thank you to whom submitted this question. Please note that the above is written from my own perspectives and is not meant to persuade, influence or represent others. Always trust what feels right to you in your own unique magickal practice. Many blessings.
- First experience of Shadow Self
Submitted question covered in this blog: " How did you start doing shadow work?" Due to the personal and sensitive nature of getting to know the parts of ourselves that we keep hidden from others (as shadow work is), it's important to start small and work your way up to more in-depth or intense inner self interactions. There is so much information on shadow work that can be found online, in books, or across social media in which there are so many ways in which many say that it can be accomplished. With all the different sources and impressions being shared, it can be difficult to discern what is the best way that will work for you. Thank you for submitting this question! Personally, my first lite-experience of shadow work growing up was amongst plants and trees when I was a young child and developing green witch. Sitting amongst the different plants and trees, being drawn to certain flowers and learning how the different types of plants and herbs effected me - what they meant to me, how they resonated with me - also taught me about myself and my own inner workings. The ways in which i would think that would lead to my associations with each plant also lead me to know myself better, be more confident and to trust myself more, and my intuition. Quite literally I was projecting aspects of myself onto the plants in which i was learning about, and how I could relate to them and their properties, and magickal value, etc. The better I knew the flowers and herbs around me the better I got to know myself on a very deep and personal level. When I was about ten or so years old, I started analysing my shadow self by staring at myself within the reflection of what I could see in windows and in mirrors, or in the reflection of water. It was this that I unintentionally learned to do from my grade five teacher who made me read the book, "Anne of Green Gables" written by L. M. Montgomery. Too make the book more interesting to read for myself as a preteen boy, I applied my own perspective of magick to the plot of the story. Within the first few chapters the orphaned young girl of the story creates an imaginary friend she would talk to in the glass of the window panes near her bed that would keep her company when lonely. I saw this as magickal and began analysing myself for subtle responses and queues while taking to reflections of myself for a moment to ask a quick question, or reconfirm my process of thinking at the time, etc. Along the way and as I got older learning more about myself even more intently. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I began written shadow work exercises in a journal style book of shadows. Many shadow work written exercise examples are available at: https://www.askagreywitch.com/shadowwork Occasionally, i do revisit these old ways of reconnecting with myself while I'm going for a walk in a forest and finding a quiet peaceful place to sit, perhaps near a stream and just ponder myself and my thoughts sitting at the base of a tree. Observing the surroundings and noticing which plants in the foliage that I am drawn, the sounds that catch my attention, what animals retain my focus, etc. all can help to recognize the internal processes of my own mind. Why am I drawn to such plants? Which symbolisms from the sight or sound of animals stand out to me? What properties of the plant may help or serve me? There may be associations or memories connected with or tied to such plants, scents, colours, textures, sounds, etc. Understanding this can define the under workings of your shadow self. Quite simply, something that seems as common as gardening can be made into an experience of enlightenment and development on an inner shadow level. The underlying processed during can help to sort out intellectually heavy thoughts in a similar way to meditation. More in depth about shadow work is available in and connected to this previous blog post: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/shadow-work-in-my-opinion It is in hopes that the above shared is informative and clear. If I can clarify anything here or if I can try to expand further on this topic, please do not hesitate to let me know. Thank you for visiting AskaGreyWitch.com and for reading my blog.
- Baneful workings with plants
Submitted question covered in this blog: " Can you describe other plants used for baneful workings ?" This question is referring to the previous blog post: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/green-witchcraft About Green Witchcraft. Thank you for this submission. Although, I do not think I should fully explain in a post how I do baneful workings with specific plants, what I can speak to are some of the plants in which I do work with within workings of somewhat of a baneful nature. Please keep in mind that my own associations with plants may be different from your own - and that's ok! We are all different. You may be wondering, 'But, why would I even do baneful workings in the first place?' Well... As a grey practitioner looking from the perspective of balance, I feel sometimes a slight negative influence can act as a friendly nudge to move in a more positive direction. As the expression goes, "The journey is most often the lesson itself". My influencing someone's journey along their way can help to learn more quickly from mistakes made, or lessons learned as they present themselves. As explained in this other previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/controlling-free-will About controlling free will. Here are some of the plants that I associate and have worked with in baneful workings. All of these plants grow naturally right in my own back yard that are available to me through their growing seasons. Non were planted by me. But rather, presented to me by spreading into my property through natural process of nature. Commonly worked with baneful associations: Bindweed Named for how when it grows, this plant stretches out across the ground in many directions feeling for other plants. When find, it grows up the plant in a spiraling fashion literally binding the plant. This vine is often used in conjoint with some binding rituals. Woody Nightshade Not as toxic as other similar sounding named Nightshade plants, this local vine is still poisonous, in particular to the berries that are produced in the late summer. The roots and older growth create a strong woody base that new foulage sprouts from. Can be a handy resource for hexes, in particular if working against another magickal practitioner. Remnants from last season's cone flowers Seemingly worthless and discarded, the remnants and left overs from the flowers and plants from last year can be useful when working with baneful intentions to help keep consistency of energies in a spell, or if the purpose was to drain, deplete or exhaust, etc. (providing no longer holding any seeds nor source of nutrients) Buttercups Many don't realize that buttercups are actually phototoxic, making the resins in the plant to cause skin to become sensitive to ultraviolet light from the sun resulting in minor burns or irritation of the skin to form. Known for use with divination and finding out the truth. Remember that kids' game, "Do you like butter?" while holding a single flower under the chin of an acused individual? Yup - witchcraft!!! Thistle Due to the prickly defensive spikes of the Thistle it can not only be used in protections. But, as well as in more baneful workings. The milky latex-like juices of the salks and stems can also be used in spells relating to banishment or establishing boundaries. Handle with care when working with this plant as, it isn't poisonous, however each little spike can sting for a moment after an initial prick in the skin. To cure the stinging, run a plantain leaf across the surface of skin that has been affected. Although, more used for healing and not baneful workings, plantain is also readily available around my home, and is very useful in my practice. This is what plantain looks like: Plantain (late summer view) -- The above is just a handful of some brief descriptions of some of the different plants that are available to me just a few steps away from my home's entrances. Getting to know the plants in your local area and how they resonated with you, is how to build on to the associations in which can be worked with within magickal workings. Thank you for visiting my website and for reading my blog. It is very much appriciated, and I do hope that you find the sharing of perspectives is helpful. If you have questions please don't hesitate to submit them to: AskaGreyWitch.com Many blessings!
- Different realms of the craft
Submitted question covered in this blog/pictures: " What other areas of witchcraft have you explored?" As mentioned around this website (probably in quite a few places), there are many different realms of magick that practitioners can explore in their individual practices. The number of ways energy can be interacted with is far too many to compile into one complete list. It should be mentioned here that each and every practice can look very different from eachother, even if both are exploring the same realm of witchcraft. As one of my favourite expressions goes, "There are just as many types of witches, as there are witches". Thank you too whom submitted this question. Here are brief descriptions of some of the realms of the craft in which I have researched, studied, and have practiced over the years (so far): Green Witchery : As early as I can remember in my childhood I worked with the energies of common plants learning about their properties and associations as well as how certain plants and herbs could benefit me, or not. Nature has always been my comfort zone. Hedge Witchery : 'Peeking through the veil' was something that seemed to come naturally to me and I had to eventually seek assistance in creating better boundaries for myself in terms of energetic or spiritual communications. Certain divinatory techniques have been learned as assistance tools for mediumship. I also consider my work with the Fae part of this realm of magick, as well as with past ancestors. Kitchen Witchery : It is my belief that I am born from a long line of generations of kitchen witches. From my mother, passed down from her mother, and so forth. I was taught so many traditional, superstitious, and magickal knowledge working with and preparing foods or beverages with my mother to be eaten or drank with the intention of having more positive affect than just tasting good or satisfying the hunger or thirst of whom consumed it. Astro Witchery : Once a novice astrologer growing up and then later advancing my knowledge and astrology reading skills over time. I was able to recognized the impact on myself, my life and my practice by the astrologic energies of the planets and stars of our galactic surroundings, and I learned to implement those energies into my practice and divination. Song Witchery : More than just playing an instrument, my music has magical influence on it's audience depending on my intention while playing. The songs while played can be cast as spells within their rhythmic chant and percussion. This form of magick can draw out from within much emotion to work with within energetic workings towards a specific intention. Psychic / Chaos Witchery: Studying and working with my own sense of intuition and energy recognition and forming a practice around it, sometimes with the assistance of divination tools and oracles. With the use of different states of mind to connect with the sub-conscious levels of thinking in order to bring forth manifestation. The idea is to bring order amongst what is permitted to happen within the chaos of reality. The daily magickal practice that has formed and that I have established for myself today is a balanced and well blended mix of all the above mentioned. Personally, I have learned for myself that the path of a witch is unending learning and nonstop development through out an entire lifetime. What realms of magick have you explored, so far? Thank you for reading my blog and learning more about me. Please don't hesitate to reach out by submitting your questions to AskaGreyWitch.com Many blessings.
- Clearing negativity
Submitted question covered in this blog: " Is there a way to stop feeling drained or feeling negativity from shadow people figures? " Thank you for this question which is greatly appreciated. Because, it is very relatable. Many have explained to me an experience of having the feeling of the presence of what some would call Shadow People. There is a previous blog post at AskaGreyWitch.com that mentions more about this at: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/shadow-figures Shadow figure experiences. If you are getting amounts of negativity around you during what feels like presences, then it would be my suggestion for you to cleanse and create protections around you and your home to help ward off some of that negativity mentioned. There is also a previous blog post regarding protections at: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/protections in case helpful. Please feel free to ask about any of the protection methods listed in that blog entry, or if I can elaborate further on one that you can relate with, I will. There are different ways to cleanse your self and your home depending on your practice and the available tools within your reach. The simplest way to cleanse your space from a presence is with noise. Simply verbally asking a presence to leave can work. When that doesn't seem like enough, one can easily make louder noise by literally banging two metal pots or pans together and shout to any negativity or presences to leave at once. A bell, gong, chimes or singing bowl, etc. is more calming way to attempt it and often suffices. Many opt for burning sage or other herbs generally starting at the front door, moving counter-clockwise through the home one room at a time purifying the space via the smoke with intention to remove any negativity or unwanted presences. The most common way to cleanse yourself is with smoke. There is a previous blog/video about smoke cleansing at: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/smoke-cleansing-and-black-salt However, I've also used sound, crystals, wands, potion spritz, or by throwing black salt in the corners of rooms, etc. Do what makes you and your space feel satisfying, calming and neutralized. Cleansing should also prevent the energy drain feeling which should allow you to rest and recover to restore your energy back to where it should be. Negative feeling shadow figures can be drawn to already existing negativity. And so, be sure to work out any possible negative energetic connections you may have within yourself. If so, you may want to attempt a cord cutting ritual to 'sever' the ties with such negativity that may already exist. Shadow Work can be effective for this, in my opinion: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/shadow-work-in-my-opinion there are also example journaling exercises available that may help draw out from within any negativity that may need to be worked through. It really does depend on what resonates with you most. Setting up protections boost our confidence which then empowers our free will. Always do what feels right to you in your own practice. What makes you feel most confident? It is in hopes that this is helpful or perhaps inspired you in a helpful way. Please don't hesitate to reach out again. Questions are always welcome at AskaGreywitch.com Many blessings,
- Good witch vs Bad witch?
Submitted question covered in this blog: " Are you a good witch? Or, a bad witch ? This is a very appriciated question. Because, I've been asked it before. There is often some confusion around what it means to be a "grey" witch. Sometimes people have difficulties understanding what it means to just be a witch, like I explain in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/hollywood-misconceptions Hollywood misconceptions. As I identify as a grey witch, in my practice there is a relationship with balance in all energetic workings. With this some what of a rare perspective I'm able to explore all sides of what I want through spell work, and also all sides of myself through shadow work. I don't see magick as light or dark, right or wrong, good or bad, nor white and black, etc. From my perspective, magick just is. Personally, I don't like the terms light and black magick as black magick already has significant meaning historically and does not mean anything negative! Originating from African tribal culture, black magick includes amazing and unique traditions that are considered part of a closed practice. Similar to Voo Doo of Hoo Doo traditions, only those accepted and trained into the rituals and beliefs should one practice the sacred traditions of black magick. For more information about closed practices, check out this other blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/open-practices-vs-closed-practices Open practices VS Closed practices. In my practice, it has involved learning as much of the baneful ways in the craft as I have learned to heal and help, giving me a unique perspective in magick. This has allowed me to work in 'grey' areas in order to bring balance. For example, i wouldn't know how to undo a hex, if I did not know how to perform one in the first place. Magick, to me, is like a balanced spectrum of energy. We can change that balance by weighing out our desires, and 'tilting' the 'scales' to find a more 'suitable neutralization point' within that positive/negative mix of energies. Sort of like deciding on a neutral colour amongst the spectrum of light. What's your favorite colour? Not everyone chooses the same comfort levels of light for their eyes. The same can be said for energetic expression. Where I see the 'suitable neutral-zone' or happy middle point in my practice may be very different from someone else's point of view of where they feel the 'suitable middle point' may be due to themselves, depending on their own circumstances and energies involved. We all have our own unique perspectives, personalities and experiences in life. Does working in 'the grey area' of a field of experience constitute someone as a bad person? Absolutely not! Is the news anchor bad if he/she/they don't have good news? Is a therapist bad for understanding disorderly mental health conditions? Is a doctor bad for studying and experimented with disease? Is a scientist bad to discover a antidote to poison? Is an astrophysisist bad for theorizing and forwarning destructive aspects of the universe? Etc. And so, I ask you: Is a witches bad if their spells are baneful in order to bring more positive outcome or additional learning, Etc.? Witches are not evil! Are there witches that consider themselves a Bad Witch? - YES! However, that is not what it means to be a " Grey Witch ". Thank you for taking the time to explore my website and for reading my blog. Please feel free to submit your own inquiries at AskaGreyWitch.com Blessings!
- Demystifying tarot
Submitted question covered in this blog: "Does tarot involve demons, or evil?" This question has also actually been asked to me in person while I was offering intuitive readings at a mall. When something is not understood, the mystery around it can often generate thoughts of anxiety or fear as the mind tends to get carried away projecting possible dangers. This is widely thanks to many of the negative fantastical ideas portrayed in novels, movies, television, etc. regarding almost anything occult related. More about the "Hollywood" misconceptions is available in this previous bog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/hollywood-misconceptions Hollywood misconceptions of witches. Within all tarot, the messages are received by associating them to the different aspects of our lives. This is how we then gain new perspectives and insight during a reading. The messages are actually drawn from within ourselves based on the symbolisms in the cards and not coming from some external source. An example of how our mind creates associations is: If you purchased a stylish new car. Once you purchased it you may also realize that you begin to notice that same brand, make and model of car being seen around being driving on the roads suddenly or seen in parking lots, etc. Whereas you didn't notice this before you purchased your vehicle. This middle of car stands out to you in your mind now that you've created an association with that model - owning one yourself. Another example: When you or your spouse has become pregnant and then suddenly you start to notice pregnant women everywhere you go! It's not that they were not around as much before your own experience of pregnancy. However, due to the current situation's circumstances your mind now associates that experience seen to your own experiences. Even if not totally the same. The same can be said with many aspects of our lives! And so, when receiving messages within a tarot reading we subconsciously make connections to the associations that we hold in our mind based on the symbolisms seen in the cards. If within a reading I pulled a three-of-swords which often resembles a very hard or hurtful communication and placed it to a future position in a card spread, one automatically starts to think what conversations may be foreseen coming soon that would be hard to have. This causes one to consider all of the possibilities of a "hard conversation to get through" and then looking at the situation involved from a different perspective than before the reading began. This new perspective into the same situation can bring insight and enlightenment needed to prepare for such a conversation, or what it could be about, or whatever it means to the one receiving the reading. Many have a misconception that tarot reading involves connecting with dark elements, or evil spirits, similar to many of the misconceptions that revolve around spirit boards. This previous blog entry speaks more about this, also known as ouiji boards at: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/ouiji-boards It is my opinion that, when tarot is used properly, is more of a tool of psychology rather than mystical or magickal. How we relate the messages within tarot to our lives makes for a more personalized, inspirational and helpful reading session. When giving myself self readings I have always found the results helpful and guiding and have never recieved bad advice, or misleading suggestions. In my profession as an intuitive tarot reader, I've even worked side by side with a registered therapist. The therapist's client was sent to me to do a tarot reading and then the client would afterwards revisit the therapist to talk about the messages recieved and work through acknowledgement and healing that was needed. The tarot reading was used to bring out from within the challenges needing to be worked through later in therapy. This is one example of how tarot can be used collaboratively with shadow work. More about that is available here: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/shadow-work-in-my-opinion Shadow work in my opinion. Most of whom receive tarot readings from me receive confirmation, assurance, or affirmation in what they are going through in their lives. In no way, over the many years that I've been involved with tarot, have I seen negativity or evil derived from our connected to receiving a tarot reading. Thank you for sending in this question as I very much appriciate the opportunity to demystify what it means to receive a tarot reading. Please feel free to send me any questions, if I can elaborate or explain further. If you are interested in more information about tarot, please feel free to visit my other website www.staffordtarot.com which includes helpful tips, suggestions and advice about learning to do tarot self readings for yourself. They're are also example readings available at: https://www.staffordtarot.com/blog/categories/live-broadcast-recordings if helpful. Thank you for visiting AskaGreyWitch.com and for reading my blog!
- Solitary VS Secular VS Coven based
The submitted question covered in this blog: "What is the difference between a solitary practitioner and a secular practitioner? Thank you for this question. Even though these terms may seem similar, as they both technically mean working with one's self. However, they do not mean the same thing: A Solitary Practitioner is a witch who practices on their own terms, based on their own individual perspectives, without interaction or collaboration from other witches. This would be someone who does not get involved with covens or other witches and prefers to keep their practices to themselves. A solitary practice may be extremely personal to the individual and their practice may not remotely reflect or represent the same as another's. Each is unique in their own ways - There are just as many types of witches as there are witches! A Secular Practitioner is a witch that does not include supernatural supreme beings, nor the belief of gods, or goddesses, in their practice. This would be someone who may or may not work with other witches as a group. However, does not work with nor devote themselves to deities. A secular practice may resemble an atheist views of not believing in god(s). However, most Wiccan witches are non-secular within their traditions and cultures, and often involves dualism (two representations such as a Goddess and God) or polytheism (beleif in multiple gods, goddesses or deities often divided amongst several pantheons, etc.). Whereas a Coven Based Practitioner is a witch that prefers to work with other witches in their practice and may or may not involve deities, demons, gods or goddesses, etc. This would be someone who get's together with other witches at gatherings and performs magick together as a group. Usually these groups align in their beliefs and traditions working close together in ritual and/or magick. All of the above can be intertwined. So, for example: I myself am a secular Wiccan. Let me explain: Atuned with the different aspects of my own human nature within myself in my practice stands in place of deities within the structure of my Seax Wiccan traditions and rituals. It is my fundamental belief that one day science will be able to explain manifestation, astral travel, psychic downloads, and Mediumship messages along with the current misunderstanding that exist around consciousness (which the experience of having a conciseness has still yet to be explained by the science or medical community) and other unexplained human experiences. This makes me a secular coven based practitioner. From my personal rare and unique perspective as a Humanist, witchcraft utilizes a human resource of intention within everyone. All human beings are capable of magickal manifestation and there are so many different ways that this can be achieved, whether it be meditation, affirmations, or divination, and many others from different cultures of the diverse human world. How we reside with and connect with: nature; our surroundings; an inner deep awareness within ourselves; is all connected to magick. Follow your instincts and trust your intuition!!! Thank you for reading my blog and for visiting the AskaGreyWitch.com website!
- The importance of Shadowwork
Submitted question covered in this blog: " Why is shadow work so important?" Thank you to whom submitted this question as I strongly believe that without my own processing of myself, and getting to know my inner self better through shadow work, I would not be the witch that I am today. More information about my opinion of Shadowwork can be read at: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/shadow-work-in-my-opinion shadow with in my opinion. Also some background information about shadow work at: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/shadow-work-expanded Shadow work expensed on further. Doing my own shadow work has allowed me over time to get to know parts of my inner self that I kept hidden. Or, I didn't even know existed!!! The better I knew myself, and the functions if my own inner workings, the better I could connect with my true intention. The stronger my intention, the more focused my magickal workings and the more powerful the manifestation. It is a developmental journey that takes steps, times and patience. One good place to start with shadow work would be to think of one thing that bothers you, and reflect on what it is about that specific thing or person that might also be a part of or within you. To figure this out, you could ask yourself gentle questions like: What is it about it that I don't like? Do I find that I have some of those same traits sometimes? What makes it so difficult to be in that situation, or around them? What parts of me create it as to the situation? Or what does that person not like when I'm around them? How do I feel about that part of myself? Contemplate on the answers and maybe journal any interesting realizations. Choose one thing at a time to work on. Take note of any discomforts, fears, or disturbances while rationalizing and analyzing the responses to the questions above. Do this exercise as many times as necessary. Each time choosing a different thing that is bothersome whether it be a trait of yourself, or a characteristic of another, or of a situation or issue, etc. There are many shadow work writting exercise examples at: https://www.askagreywitch.com/shadowwork Shadow work journaling exercises examples. Quite often this type of reflection can lead to some kind of growth. For example: the realization of a resolution to a problem, or acceptance of something, or of ourselves or of someone else, or the evolution of one's own weakness eventually becoming a strength. Calming and quieting the mind can be key. Strategies, such as meditation may assist. Don't give up!!! It can take much time and exploration of ones inner self and can feel like a never ending cycle. The path of a witch is a life time of development. This other previous blog entry speaks about how I started doing shadow work myself: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/first-experience-of-shadow-self First experience of shadow work. Some potential benifits of doing shadow work are: Build self esteem Gain confidence Build better relationships with others Accept different aspects of yourself Discover talents that may have been hidden Improve creativity within Understand your true intentions better Increase compassion towards others Improve wellness overall Many blessings! - Crossroads and the veil
Submitted question covered in this blog: "Is a 'crossroads witch' the same or similar to a 'grey witch'?" What a great question! Thank you to whom submitted it. In my opinion these two practices are not the same. However, do tend to intertwine together beautifully. First off all, a crossroads witch is someone who's practice in the craft revolves around the back and forth processes between life and death and vice versa. It's often referred to as a cross roads as symbolically a way in which crossing over to the other side of whatever awaits us after life has extinguished, and as well as crossing back in the process of being reborn. The crossroads of "the veil" between life and death. Traffic intersections are often viewed as symbolic crossroads as there are more fatal accidents at busy interections than most other roads, lane ways, streets. Etc. with more points of entry. "The veil" is a term to describe the boundary that exists between the living and the dead. When witches use the expression, "peeking through the veil" it means gaining insight through and from the other side of that boundary. Another ten that is often used to describe this boundary is "a hedge". The fall time of year is considered when this viel or hedge appears the thinnest due to the fact of the amount of death occurring reach fall season. Symbolically speaking, piering through the branches of the hedge to get an impression of what is on the other side. Essencially, this is another way to describe achieving a form of spirit communication. This is why it is sometimes referred to as hedge-witchcraft. I beleive that Hedge witchcraft and crossroads witchcraft are pretty much the same thing. Quite often a hedge witch or crossroads witch can assist others by interpreting spiritual interactions of the ancestors and loved ones of others. A grey witch is someone who finds balance in their practice, looking at all sides of magick and finding a neutral, centre point or mid grey area to become comfortable working in. When finding the balance of life, grey practitioners often dabble in death magick. To find the positive in death, there can be an outreach or support to live. And, vice versa. The grey area of life and death often means workong close to the veil, as described above. More about that can be found in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/different-realms-of-the-craft Different reasons of the craft. These perspectives can compliment eachother into one grounded and solid practice and often involves the worship of similar deities. However, even though can blend nicely, each has its own realm of witchcraft. It is in hopes that this makes sense and has been clear. If I can clarify or expand on anything written advice, please do not hesitate to let me know. - Working with death
Submitted question covered in this blog: " Do you work with death in your practice ?" Thank you for this question as it touches on a big portion of my workings along my own path in the craft. There are several ways in which I can think of to address this question. The first thing that should be mentioned is that whether it's realised or not, death is around us all of the time! And, there are certain times of year (specifically the fall) when they're is much more death occurring than any other time. Many see this as the best time to develope an understanding of working with death as a practice. But, to each is own. In my profession I have done and do intuitive psychic mediumship for some who pay for my use of intuition as a service. This involves the sensing of energetic connections around someone. More about that is mentioned in this previous blog post: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/spirit-mediumship Spirit Mediumship. Getting impressions from which, I'm able to interpret as best that I can what the messages are to be received. Quite often I interpret what is needed to be said not knowing it's relevance. However, may be fundamentally meaningful to the person I am doing a reading for. This is an intuitive form of communication beyond the veil. As mentioned in this more recent previous blog post: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/crossroads-and-the-veil which describes the Crossroads and the veil, that the fall time of year is considered when this veil or hedge appears the thinnest. Symbolically speaking, piering through the branches of the boundary to get an impression of what is on the other side. Essencially, this is another way to describe achieving a form of spirit communication. There are many ways in which this interaction can happen, either through temperature, sound, touch, smell, emotion or specific thoughts, visions, etc. that all require interpretation. Divination techniques have been formed around these interpretations and associations in the different ways in which we resonate, relate to, or connect with energies from life that once was and can have profound meaning as we associate the messages to our lives as the living. For example, bone throwing, or other death based oracles that provide guidance and perspectives sometimes based on a topic or question. Whereas each collected bone used in an oracle holds an energy of the animal of origin. Moreover, even the specific bone itself, from a certain part of the animals body, can have further significant meaning when used as a guidance tool. Such as a jaw bone may represent a message regarding to communication depending on the practice. Another related divination tool would be a spirit board as mentioned in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/ouiji-boards Ouiji Boards. These energetic expressions mentioned above can also be used to atune to intention within spellwork by including such bones, body parts of deceased creatures, or even entire carcuses used within the ritual of magickal workings. In my opinion, a funeral is a ritual, a magickal rite in itself that often involves ceremony. A more simplified example would be finding a dead bumble bee on a flower (probably the result of an attack from another defending insect perhaps). Paying honourage to the bee for what it stood for in its life to others acknowledge hard work, travel, community, communication, abundance, etc. Another way that I work with death in my practice is working closely with the actual process and acceptance of death itself. I do have an area of concecrated ground on my property in which animals of many kinds have been layed to rest and returned to the earth with an honorable, more deserving and meaningful intention for each. This burial site contains unmarked graves of not only wild animals that have been discovered to have parished close to my home, as well as livestock casualties, and also dearly beloved passed pets. This has remained a sacred and impactful place for me to visit and ground myself, receiving back the support and care that I've shown to so many other creatures while they were alive. Graveyards are the last which I want to mention in this blog as when I visit gravesites I feel it important to pay respect and show some sort of offering as I enter, and exit if I'm not already familiar with at least one of the deceased. When visiting a graveside of someone I knew in their life, i acknowledge the impact on my life that they've made. The energies of spirits can assist within workings where intentions may align. For example, requesting assistance with a healing spell from an ancestor who was a healer. Thank you for visiting AskaGreyWitch.com and reading my blog! - Movie misunderstandings that continue to exist
Some of the mislead questions collected over a period of time covered in this blog: "Can you fly like witches do in movies?" "Isn't magic only for fantasy of children?" " Do you know a spell to change me to look like someone else?" "...only gay men are male witches..." "Are you a feminine guy, since your a witch?" "Will you allow lord Jesus Christ be save you from your demonic evil self?" " Is there a spell that will fix everything bad in my life? " "Is witchcraft connected to the devil?" "Can I redesign your website?" Continued from my previous blog post: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/hollywood-misconceptions Hollywood misconceptions. My website is open to the public and finale in search engines online. And so, over the past year more questions have been recieved that I did not feel quite right to individually blog about, which some of which are listed above or in the blog entry mentioned above. Again, i did not create a blog entry for each of these questions. However, i did respond in email to each sender referring them to previously submitted blog entries in order to provide them with the information that I thought may be most helpful. Over time, I've thought I should at least write another mini-rant again about some if these further submissions with interesting perspectives as well. 🙂 He-he - some of these misconceptions make me laugh!!! Flying witches : As already mentioned in the previous blog entry linked above, that witches don't actually levitate or fly on brooms as this is a widely beleive misconception. And, continues to be misunderstood to this day. Yet, still represented if witches in modern movies and stories. Only for children: Absolutely not!!! Magick (spelled with a 'k') is for anyone of any age, as energy and energetic influences exists within and around all of us all of the time. Magic (spelled without the 'k') are clever tricks meant to entertain all ages - not just for children either. Fix all / Do-it-all spells: There are still many huge misunderstandings thanks to popular story books and movies that magick involves simply snapping one's fingers with little effort to accomplish complicated outcomes. Or, that simple spells can change physics. This just isn't realistic! Sometimes the manifestation can open the door that leads you to the path where you have to pit in all the hard work to obtain the goal. Nothing is just given to you without effort, cause or effect. As the saying goes, "Everything has a cost". Feminine / only women: The term "witch" is multi-gender and does not refer more to feminine people nor female only. But, all and any one can be a witch. Witch means "the wise" and so witchcraft is the craft of the wise. Man or woman or non-binary, etc. It's really all about intention and what type of practice works best for you. The devil: Any devil related questions are/can be referred to this previous blog post: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/how-i-became-a-witch in which the question, "Did you sell your soul to become a witch" was responded to in that blog entry. Jesus Christ : No matter which deities or gods or goddesses you worship in your own practice, or religion, does not mean that others are wrong to have honoured and worshipped different from your own. We all can personally resonate differently depending on our life experiences, cultures, backgrounds, etc. And, that's ok!!! Personally, as a secular practitioner myself, only the aspects of my inner self guide me as a witch. Redesign of website : The last question included is one that is not related to witchcraft. 😆 However, that I do receive often from various "programmers" (probably scammers themselves). Which i honestly just treat as SPAM messages and are not responded to. I thought I'd mention that I received them anyways 😉 All other questions received (so far) have been responded to with a blog entry at: www.askagreywitch.com/blog If anyone does have any suggestions for the website, videos it blog please feel free to make suggestions to greywitchbryan@gmail.com and i will consider. Thank you for taking the time to read through my little rant style blog entry. It is so very much appriciated to receive serious feedback, questions or comments relevant to witchcraft at AskaGreyWitch.com Blessed be.

- Source of magickal ingredients/items
Submitted question covered in this blog: "Where do you purchase your ingredients and items?" This question is very much appriciated, Thank you, as there is a common misconception that doing witchcraft can be expensive to obtain the necessary supplies to do spells. This is simply untrue. Many magickal ingredients can be obtained from our surroundings outside within nature. As described in this previous blog post: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/self-made-tools-within-my-craft Self-made tools within my craft. Many believe that the more locally sourced, the better. Personally, I myself obtain most of what I need for my spellwork and rituals from my own naturalized yard around my home: As the seasons change, so does my practice as the available supplies that I work with also change through out the wheel of the year. I look forward to these phases of my practice as it has evolved with each turn. Of course, not everything need be home made or created or grown yourself. As long as you cleanse or concecrate items clearing then if others' energies before implementing them into your workings, rituals, traditions or ceremonies. Many common items around the house and home can be successfully implemented into magickal workings with associations for each and can also be worked with intention. As referred to in this previous blog entry also: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/substitutions-from-common-household-items Common household irem substitutions There is also nothing wrong with buying ingredients or tools from other creators, practitioners or merchants. It is believed that the creation of a tool is energetically charging that item as it's made. So, getting to know the supplier may also be important to some. I feel the need to reiterate cleansing and clearing the energies. For example, smoke cleansing mentioned in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/smoke-cleansing-and-black-salt smoke cleansing and black salt. However, creating the item is not the only way to charge an item with your energy. It really depends on each individual and it is up to you how you may connect with the particular item, tool, or ingredient, etc. Some practitioners carry the item on them as much a possible, others sleep with the item under their pillow (if possible), others do ceremony or ritual to connect their energy to an item, carve or draw letters, symbols, runes, or other magickal markings on the item, etc. What ever you feel is most connecting. To acknowledge the question more directly, some places which I have heard witches to purchase supplies are: Department stores near by At the grocery store or local market At a local farmers' market At small popup witchy or crystal markets, etc. Purchased used from friends, family, etc. Myself, I like to find local metaphysical shops to support by purchasing supplies or collaborate my business services with if/when possible. Please see this other previous blog entry which may be of interest: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/purchased-items-used-in-my-practice purchased items used in my craft. If deciding to go online shopping and purchase items and supplies through website platforms, such as Amazon for example, please be mindful of the source of the ingredients or materials of tools that you are inquiring about. Ethically sourced components and procedures to obtain the product is important when it comes to the energies and associated properties involved. If companies are not up front about this information, it would be my recommendation to purchase it from somewhere else. There are also many fraudulant merchants unfortunately who sell inappropriate items such as fake crystals, misidentified herbs, unofficial tarot decks, non-realistic tool replicas, etc. which can be misleading even if there are images of the products. Be careful!!! - especially if purchasing ingredients to be absorbed or ingested, such as salves, tinctures, oils, or herbs, etc. ...i prefer to make my own as that I know how it was made, with what, and added my own energyic influence and intention throughout the process of making them. It is in hopes that this is helpful. Thank you for reading my blog. Questions are always welcome at AskaGreyWitch.com Best!
- To hex, or Not to hex...
Submitted question covered in this blog: "... Should I send a hex?" Hmm, to hex? Or, not to hex? ...That is the question! As a grey witch myself, I tend to see these kinds of situations as an opportunity to bring balance. Thank you so much for submitting this question. It is my opinion to do what brings to you the most healing out of what you've been through yourself. In my perspective, if the justice of throwing a hex will bring you healing or peace of mind... Then, so be it. And, give them back what they have given to you - absolutely! However, be sure not to come from a revengeful negative perspective that's unbalanced. That sort of unbalanced, one-direction of negative energy tends to 'bounce back' as it will then balance itself out, in my expirience. Also, a hex doesn't have to have a negative outcome. For example, for the target of the spell to learn the lessons themselves from their own actions so to expand their knowledge as that they can do or know better. Perhaps this may require a hex to push them down the right path to learn from their own mistakes. With a positive intention, is that considered a baneful working? ... In my opinion, yes. Even negative or baneful workings can lead to positive outcomes. As described in this previous bog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/useful-baneful-magick Useful baneful magick. Of course, not all witches will look at it this way: Be ever mindful that what goes around, tends to come around. Many practitioners use a moral compass or general rule to their practices, known as the Law of III. This is the basic belief structure of that what ever is sent out will come back to the caster three time fold stronger. This means that if you send out positivity, you will receive three times as much positivity back in your life. However, if you send out negativity, you'll get back three times more negativity in your life. It sorta goes hand in hand with the "Golden Rule" in most religions: basically referring to 'Do into others the way you want to be treated'. Using this moral code to evaluating the risks, cause and effect of this modality of spellwork can help secure a way forward with the use of magick that helps the practitioner feel more secure, confident and safe within their workings. Other magickal practitioners will not even attempt a hex if it resembles baneful intentions. As the Wiccan rede refers to: "... If it harm none, do what ye will.". There are also many witches who feel that their practices and traditions should only involve positive intentions in their magick. Therre is a growing population of new age witches that can themselves "white witches" who do not incorporate anything negative in their practices. To each us own! There are alternatives to performing Hexes and Curses such as divination, cord cutting, sending blessings, or healings, vibration raising, etc. And, other positive intentions meant to be gentle. But, can still be effective. This is often an area that many witches will go to first before attempting more baneful workings such as a jinks, curse, or hex. Another consideration to think about is the amount of work and energy that it takes to do a successful hex. One may consider if it is actually worth doing in the first place! Or, is there a charm, sachet, or other technique that would suffice, or be more suitable to the situation at hand. As mentioned in this orbits blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/curses-and-hexes Curses and Hexes Thank you for submitting this question, and for reading my blog! Hope to be helpful. Many blessings!
- Out of the broom closet
Submitted question covered in this blog: "Can you suggest a spell to ' come out of the broom closet? '" Thank you for this question. The term 'come out of the broom closet' means to reveal yourself to others as a witch. This question is very much appriciated as the process of telling other people you are a witch has been known to actually put people's lives in jeopardy with the number of misunderstandings and misconceptions that so exist, as mentioned in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/hollywood-misconceptions Hollywood misconceptions. So it makes sense to me that magick may be helpful to 'sweep up that mess!'. However, it would be my advice to be carefull using spellwork to resolve such a personal situation. As, with others' free will involved should be handled with care and caution. Spells of small influences of knowledge and understanding may be better then a full-out spell to get them to accept you as a witch. For example, where will you be if/when the spell wears off? ... When the spell wears off you want to feel good knowing that the people you told are not just accepting you due to the magick involved. You want them to accept you for who you are, on their own terms. And, not to just be forced to comply - that is not an understanding. Like, a communication spell (for example) may help them to 'hear what your saying' more clearly. It is still left up to them themselves with their own free will to accept it. A petition working can be successfully done with communication spells, if you are familiar with? Here is a previous blog entry that mentions one type of petition spell: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/petition-to-remove-banish petition to remove or banish. Instead of folding the petition away from you symbolizing leaving you, fold it towards you symbolizing coming to you. Instead of turning the petition left/widdershins/counter clockwise to symbolize removal, turn the petition right/deosil/clockwise to symbolize additional. Creating a magickal petition is basically writing down what you want (petitioning your desire) and then doing something relevant or meaningful with it in ritual with intention to manifest it. For example, creating a comunication sigil on a small piece of paper, folding it 3 times turning it clockwise with each fold towards you (associating with bringing it in) and then using it like a little spell talisman. You can keep it in your pocket during the difficult conversation or behind your phone case, etc. Do something with it that resonates with your intention of having clear communication. (Or "planting the seed" so-to-speak so to get the thought process in the right direction at first) The intention should be set with the creation of the sigil, and the petition (little folded piece of paper) will reflect that energy during the spell - however you use it. I sometimes create a petition to burn it in a candle spell and then scry the flame to determine or foresee the spell's chances of outcome. A petition can be placed inside a spell jar. Or, in conjunction with other forms of magick in the many realms of the craft. There are many ways in which a petition can be implemented into spellwork for that desired intentional boost to your workings. What I also like about sigil use with petitions is if found by anyone else, it will not be as obvious what the meaning of it is. Or, another way of being discreet is to use a theban charector sets, or charged runes, glyphs, or symbols to represent your intentional desire. More info on sigils can be found at: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/sigil-work Sigil work. To know what your message is, or what your working should represent, think of what you feel when you focus on "acceptance", or "communication". For example, some resonate string with communication. Think back to the little kids' game of creating a 'telephone' with two cups attached to each with string. Speaking into one cup allows the vibrations of voice to travel down the string and echo into the second cup at the other end of the string. Hence, being able to hear the message given from the first Cup to the second. Or, some can resonate a cup to listening, if you are familiar with the technique of putting a cup against a wall or door and placing your ear against the end of the cup to listen to what's happening in the next room. Etc. Some green witches use black eyed susan flowers, or sunflowers, etc. as a symbols of acceptance, because the peddles are bright yellow with dark brown/black centres in the blossoms which represent the contrast of ideas forming into something together that's beautiful. Spells work best when done ourselves due to the fact that the more connected and emotionally involved, and satisfying the workings are, the more likely it will manifest. And so, I would suggest that you create a unique spell that feels right for you individually to your circumstances. Deep shadow work can also be helpful to discover the exact method of a magickal working in order to determine my associations and tools and ingredients, methods, incantation, etc. More info on that can be found at: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/shadow-work-in-my-opinion Shadow work in my opinion. Shadow work can also help reveal underlying issues or traumas that need to be worked out in order to tackle start such a personally revealing and potentially difficult journey. If I can help further, please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you so much for visiting my website, reading my blog and submitting questions!!! Many blessings!
- Magickal rings
Submitted question covered in this blog: "Why do you wear so many rings?" Thank you for watching the videos, as mentioned at: https://www.askagreywitch.com/blog/categories/videos and thank you also for submitting this question. As mentioned along with the submitted question, many male witches tend to wear large or many rings on their fingers. There could be many reasons for this to each's unique practice. And so, I can only speak from my own perspective. It is true, I do wear many rings. It Is my understanding that this is not exclusive to male witches. And, that witches in general seem to wear many rings on their fingers. In my tradition, each finger represents a different intention in which rings can be worn to symbolize. It traces back in my practice to when I learned to do divination by palmistry. By studying the lines, curves, markings, valleys and mounts of each of the hands can one receive messages of the past, present, and future on a wide range of life's experiences. This was also the first divination I was inspired to learn by some in my extended family. Along with learning about the lines and design of palms I also appriciate how fingers can represent their own qualities. For example, there is an associative and historic reason that a wedding ring is worn on the specific finger on the left hand to stand for a symbol of love and prosperity. It is my understanding that long ago there was a fundamental beleif that a vein went through the body from the heart down the left arm and to the 'ring' finger, such is why it was once s symbol of love. However, this finger in palmistry is representative of prosperity. Gold if symbolic for protection. And so, the main reason most wear a gold band as a wedding ring is to symbolisms protecting your prosperity for the one that you love. If you think of the strategy of tying a string on one of your fingers in order to not forget something you want to remember within a certain time range, seeing the string helps to jog the memory. "What was it that I was supposed to remember? Oh yeah, not to forget..." - whatever the string is supposed to symbolize. By having a string occasionally appear in view throughout there is an occasional reminder not to forget something. In which, one hopes to then remember when the time comes. This was also a function of a ring. Thinking back to the wedding ring example, it is not only a sign to others that an individual is "taken", or "not on the market" in the dating world, so-to-speak. It is also a reminder to the individual wearer to respect the bond of the relationship that the ring represents. Each finger is defined by a different representation: the thumb represents satisfaction; the pointer finger represents direction; the middle finger represents eternity; the ring finger represents prosperity; and the little finger represents travel. Each hand is defined: by our past experiences (the non-main hand) and the future experiences (the main hand). Each ring is consecrated, charged and enchanted within ceremonial magick with a specific intention for a purpose of self soul development. This is a form of High Magick. More information about the difference between high magick and low magick and neutral magick can be read in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/high-magick-vs-low-magick Types of Magick. So, coming back to the submitted question, I personally wear many rings as representations to different intentions that I set, which are associated with the meanings of the different fingers upon which the rings are worn. Each ring also adds is own uniqueness to the intention . By wearing the enchanted rings in this way thereafter, my subconscious and conscious mind are always reminded of my intentions set in order to developed myself further in the ways ritually intended upon on a spiritual level. It is in hopes that this makes sense. Please feel free to let me know if I can clarify further, or if there are any other questions, at AskaGreyWitch.com Bright blessings✨
- The penticle
Submitted question covered in this blog: " What is your thoughts on the Pentacle? For symbolism, uses, protection? " Thank you for this question as there are many misconceptions about the penticle symbol and why and how it is used within witchcraft. And so, this question is very much appriciated! The most common misunderstanding about this symbol, a five pointed star within a circle, is that it is somehow tied to evil. And, that just simply isn't true. Ultimately, there is no devil in witchcraft. And so, this symbol is not actually connected with the Christian devil, as commonly taught and believed. There may however very well be traditions that use this symbol within that context. But, not within witchcraft, nor Wicca. Many consider it to be a simple of faith. In my practice, it is used as a symbol of self empowerment. It represents the five aspects of human power and ability: Action, Intellect, Emotions, Needs, and our Soul. If you place these as points evenly apart and draw a line connecting each to eachother it forms the shape of the penticle. Within witchcraft these traits are often embodied into the elements: Fire, Air, Earth, Water, and Spirit. If spirit coinsides with any of the points on the penticle it is still connected to the other four aspects or elements (maintaining a penticle shape between them). That consistent connection with our own human nature empowers Love, Respect, Gratitude, Compassion, and Forgoveness within. This level of grounding and structure within ourselves also provides protection from external influences. The more grounded and confident we are as human beings the less likely any kind of external influence will have much effect on us whether magickally sourced or not. This is the bases of magickal protections and wards. More about protections is available in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/protections Protecting yourself further. It is my opinion that this is one of the oldest protective and magickal symbols used by humankind and it's meaning has been recycled by many cultures and traditions of the past to represent different forms of self empowerment. Also, in the past, anything not within Catholic traditions was considered to be Pagan, and was often deemed dark or evil by church leaders as a persuasion away from other traditions and recruitment into their own. This left much misunderstanding and misconceptions to spread and survive over centuries within the planet's history. Including reference to the penticle. Due to this, it's no wonder there is so much confusion around the meanings and uses of this symbol. The Penticle. Was this helpful? Please feel free to let me know by contacting me. - Winter Solstice and Yule
The submitted question covered in this blog: "What does Yule mean to you?" This question is appriciated, thank you for submitting it. I also appriciate the sharing and my own learning of different traditions within the submission, as can vary between each. In my traditions, Yule starts with the winter solstice. The time of the winter solstice as observed in nature, is a period of descent and rest, going within the saftey of shelter, within ourselves and taking in all that we have been through. Like nature, and the world around me in the northeastern hemisphere, this is a time of hibernation and is necessary for the tired bodies and burdened minds of creatures - including ourselves! That natural instinct to go inwards as nearly all creatures are doing is strong and shared amongst most mammals. The weather gets cold and hard, and while everyone stays indoors, and seperated from eachother, it can feel isolating and lonely. There are so many distractions: alcohol; lights; shopping; overworking; over spending; comfort food; finances; movies and games; etc. todays busy society of rush-and-go mentality keeps us avoiding our natural instinct to surrender ourselves, mind and body, to the darkness. Solstice draws my inner self towards an annual time of peace and reflection, embracing the darkness and forgiving, accepting and loving and embracing letting go of the past year, and all that has happened within that year. It becomes a time of gatherings and get-together, coming together to help eachother through the difficult weather and darkness to share warmth, food and shelter when needed. Personally, many types of gatherings, parties, festivals, rituals and traditions have formed at the time and are centered around this reflection, support and appriciation for one another in my life, such as my immediate family, for the week that follows. The yuletide. Yule, for me, lasts the week from Winter Solstice to New Years. It starts at the darkest three days of the year symbolised by the Yule log tradition. It then continues with joy merrily until the first signs of the light returning, and starting anew, on New Years. This is a great time of great reflection and shadow work for me. On New Years, I read a letter that I wrote myself last year, and then write myself a letter that will be read and responded to next year at the same time of year. Each year, I write to myself, and read my letter to myself, and respond with my thoughts for the last and coming year for myself. With the coming light, comes more energy, hope, and vitalization of our mind and body into the light. Above is a quick description of one way that I acknowledge the Solstice and Yule. There are so many other ways as well in which this time is year is celebrated. Do what feels right and what speaks to you. Thank you for reading about my own perspective. If there are any questions or would like to share feedback please feel free to do so at AskaGreyWitch.com Many bright blessings! Update : This more recent blog entry includes a video of a fun chat about friends about some Solstice and Yule traditions: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/winter-solstice-chat
- Wicca within witchcraft
Submitted question covered in this blog: "What are some ways in which Wicca had been incorporated into witchcraft?" This is an excellent question - thank you for submitting it! It is true that many components of Wicca have been intertwined with non-Wiccan Witchcraft practices. Many of the rituals and traditions that many witches d do and follow have Wiccan origins without even realizing it. In order to separate these two distinctions of magickal workings, i feel it necessary to reiterate the differences between high magick and low magick, as mentioned in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/high-magick-vs-low-magick Types of Magick. It's worth mentioning that I'm not referring to "Magic", done for entertainment, as explained in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/magick My perspective of magick. Wiccan traditions and rituals are most commonly high magick as most ceremonial magick is about self improvement on a spiritual level. Whereas, low magick is more practical and based on needs manifested from within the mundane. Many Wiccan practices are incorporated into folk magick practices as a way of creating structure and stability to a personal folk based practice. For example, magick circles are a Wiccan ritual even though many witches use this technique for encouraging grounding and achieving energy containment. Here are some examples of how Wicca and witchcraft have become intertwined in many practices today: Example rituals that are actually Wiccan in origin: Opening/closing of a circle Calling to the four quarters/watchtowers Bread and wine rituals Calling down of the Moon ritual The user of an Athame (Magickal ritual blade) High Magick ceremony Beleif of the Summerland (form of afterlife) Esbats and Sabbats, formalized coven gatherings, etc. ...etc. Examples of witchcraft that is used within Wicca The use of a besom (magickal broom) The use of a wand Casting a spell Some folk magick traditions Working with moon phases Wheel of the year (Pagan origin) Regular witch gatherings (coven) ...etc. Examples of witchcraft in its own rite: Inherited traditions passed down through family (non wiccan) Casting spells Magickal ingredients and workings Creating potions and concoctions, etc. Bring an intention into reality Identifying as a witch (do witchcraft) Group workings within magickal realms (or coven based) Incantation Manifestation of intented symbolic representation of desire ...etc. Not considered witchcraft examples. But, is related to: Divination Premonition Meditation Affirmations Psychic mediumship Creating salves, tinctures, and other medicines Reincarnation Spirituality Religious ceremony Having dreams, dream work Animal and nature interaction Shadow work Cooking Synchronisities ...etc. Examples of mundane (Purhaps influences by. But, not connected to witchcraft): Relationships (friends, family, co workers, neighbours, etc.) Free will, Lives, life path, soul contracts, etc. Sports and recreational activities ...etc. Do you remember YOUR first spell? Chances are, you've already done spells whether you consider yourself a witch, or not. Many non magickal people of the general public do witchcraft regularly, at least annually, without even realizing it. Can you think of other examples in which a seemingly ordinary custom could actually be witchcraft? Think of something simple in your life that happens regularly. Such as something a common as a birthday tradition, for example. Can blowing out a candle on the top of a cake be considered witchcraft? Actually, yes - it is!!! Some examples of simple witchcraft: Wishes on flying parachute-seeds caught in the wind. Placing a buttercup under someone's chin to determine if they are lieing when asked, "do you like butter?" Picking off the pettles of a daisy flower one by one in order to determine the answer to a yes/no question. Making a wish on candles and then blowing out the candles on top of a birthday cake after circling friends and family sing and chant. Then, everyone shares the cake together. Etc. There are so many ways in which witchcraft can be incorporated into every day life with rituals as simple as stirring intention into your morning coffee in order to set the influence for the day. And, so on. In the similar ways in which parts of witchcraft have found a place in everyday modern life of the mundane folk (non-magickal). Also, parts of Wicca have found their place in the practices and workings of the modern witch (non-Wiccan). Any questions, please feel free to submit them. - Love spells - good vs bad
Submitted question covered in this blog: " Are love spells actually harmful? " In social media these days, witches mention many warnings and many cautions against love spells due to the number of concerns and misunderstandings that revolves around them. Thank you so much for submitting this intrequing question! Free Will: The first thing that should be mentioned is: When it comes to free will, it's all energetic "influence". There is no such thing as to have energetically control over someone else. Even with love spells, the target has the choice to follow through with the particular influence they are faced with magickally. It is a common misconception that people can be forced to fall in love against their own decision, which is one reason why love spells are so misunderstood. In fact, our free will is so strong, that we ourselves have a choice to follow through with everything we do, including our own soul 's contracts or destiny! It is with our own free will to decide if we follow the path intended for ourselves, or if they will be repeated in the next reincarnations again, and again until you choose freely to will it. Protection : Protections boost our confidence and thus empower our free will to not be so influenced by external intentions, negative or positive. In order to heal from a good health spell, we have to accept the healing influences from the spell. Someone who is not open to receiving the healing will not be influenced by a good health spell. The same can be said with baneful magick. Sending negativity at someone will only be successful of the negative influence has any impact on that particular person. Someone who is strong willed is more unlikely to be impacted by external influences sent at them. This is why it sometimes takes a weakened mind or vulnerable state of being to be strongly impacted by others energetic intentions. It is often the advice of other witches to start a practice with protecting yourself first and foremost. So, in reference to the question submitted, if someone is committed in their thinking, or not interested at all, a love spell may not have any effect. If however there is a slightest of interest from the other person a love spell may influence the target to explore those feelings further. It is with their own free will to do so, making the spell successful. The same can be said with a love potion. Who ever drinks the portion will be influenced to fall in love, not forced. Here is an example of how one type of love potion is made in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/making-a-love-potion Making a love potion. How can it be harmful ? One way where love potions and love spells can become a problem is with mistaken or unnoticed infatuation which a love spell can exacerbate it to a whole new level. Understanding your target, and doing the shadow work beforehand can help to determine the right approach with spellwork and eliminate many of these challenges in the workings. Any spell can have unforeseen consequences of not properly and thoroughly considered beforehand. Shadow work can be a valuable tool in sorting out for yourself if a love spell should even be used in your particular situations. Love spells are not bad. They are very often misunderstood, or performed with the impossible intention of controlling someone else - which just isn't going to happen - no matter how powerful of a witch you are. Here is an example of a love spell in this previous blog entry: https://www.askagreywitch.com/post/a-love-spell A Love Spell. Hope that this helps. Many blessings✨
